When a 31-year old mother of two feels overwhelmed, stressed, depressed and riddled with anxiety, we may not think its such a big deal. Don't we all find ourselves in these varying mental states from day to day? But what if her 9-year old son was feeling the same? A few days ago, Dr Sharmard Charles highlighted Lauren Huddle and her family on NBC Nightly News. Was there some miracle cure that the greatest medicinal minds of our generation had found? Not quite. It was simply a dose of nature. And both mother and son were in desperate need of it.
Although not new, there is a growing number of doctors writing prescriptions for "nature, 30 minutes per day 5 times per week," and its called Ecotherapy. Its a field of science that focuses on nature-based therapies and exercises to help people cope with physical and mental illnesses (or conditions). And the clinical evidence is staggering. To quote a recent study out of the University of Essex, researchers found that 9 out of 10 patients suffering from depression felt "higher self-esteem after a walk through a park." Nearly three-quarters reported feeling less depressed and the researchers found that people actually experienced an "immunizing" effect which allowed them to recover more quickly from illnesses.

Its So Obvious Its Funny
Justin Bogardus, writer/director of the wildly funny Nature Rx campaign is not only winning awards, but winning over our hearts. Justin jokes that prescription strength Nature (terra mater) is a non-harmful medication shown to relieve the crippling symptoms of modern life. But he also cautions us that Nature may cause you to slow down or quit your job... and seriously consider WTF you are doing with your life.

Geddit?!? Gosh I hope so... been working on that one.
At Remedy Hike, the deep, lasting connections that are made on each hike is obvious. Is it because I am so charming and welcoming that people cannot wait to make a new friend? Partly. But in all seriousness, that charming, charismatic welcoming force is Mother Nature herself. The sounds of birds chirping, the scents of pine and eucalyptus all draw us closer to the beautiful green spaces around us and to each other.
Since our hikes are shut down until 2018 ... [currently under construction for dazzling upgrades] ... we ask you to grab a friend (or give me a call) and get outside this festive season. I only ask that you thoroughly enjoy the Ecotherapy and write down each and every benefit because I cannot wait to hear about them all in the new year.
Have a super wonderful holiday season and happy new year!!!
We will always be disappointed that a group of squid isn't called a squad.
