When Companies Give Back... Everyone Wins The Social Enter(prize)
October 27, 2017 | Brandon Mills
This week we want to highlight the members of our community that are truly using their platforms to make a difference. So, why not start with the man that started it all, our neighbor Blake Mycoskie.
In Case You Have Been Living Under A Rock
In case you missed the meteoric rise of his company TOMS, along with their One for One® initiative, lets take a closer look at their impact. You probably know that their inspirational business model helps a low income person in need with every product purchased. But did you know that (to date), the TOMS umbrella of businesses has donated 60 million pairs of shoes to children since 2006? TOMS Eyewear has restored sight to over 400,000 since 2011, and TOMS Roasting Company has helped provide over 335,000 weeks of safe water since launching in 2014. In 2015, TOMS Bag Collection was founded to help provide training for skilled birth attendants and distribute birth kits containing items to help women safely deliver their babies. As of 2016, TOMS has supported safe birth services for over 25,000 mothers.
TOMS seems to be doing a lot of things really well. But our focus is on your health. Click on the link below to hear more from Blake as he discusses the importance of socially motivated businesses doing one thing really well.
Philanthropy Can Be A Complicated Topic
From our limited understanding of tax code, it seems that some of the more fortunate companies love to use donations as a tax write off. At times, it looks as though these companies are content with giving themselves a pat on the back and saving a few dollars in taxes. But real social impact is obvious when companies like TOMS go so far above and beyond. This is proven by creating initiatives that have transparent accountability for the money generated off of profits. We, as consumers, should pay closer attention to social enterprising models to follow each donation or dollar made. Let us be active in ensuring that the money raised and products gifted, actually go to the people who need it most.
